Bringing Back the Past

The Silver Grille

Restored ceiling of the Silver Grille once the place for ladies to have lunch at Higbee's Department store in Cleveland.

Higbee's opened the Silver Grille in 1931 on the tenth floor of their flagship department store located in the Terminal Tower Complex in Cleveland. It brings back the memory of the larger then life department stores of the mid-twentieth century in the US. Floor after floor of products and the delight of stopping for a break and a light lunch. A shopping experience that is now lost. The Ritz Carlton in Cleveland has restored the Silver Grille and rents out the space for special events, so you can still experience the art deco beauty of the room.

Hi Martha,
I like the picture of the restored ceiling. By coincidence I was meeting a friend in a pub in Co. Leitrim, Ireland. As in keeping with a lot of the older public bars in this country it has a lovely patterned ceiling. Some of the pubs have set about cleaning and thus reviving them. The ceilings help to maintain a lovely character.
Keep up the good work.

All the best,

I have been in some of the pubs in Ireland, even a couple that were still split for men and women. I am glad to hear the old decor is being appreciated and restored.

Thanks for the comment.
