Gerome is well known for his beautiful paintings but he also took up sculpture late in his career and created a sculpture based on this same subject.

Oh, beautiful. Anybody who's seen a really well executed sculpture, like Michelangelo's David, knows exactly what this is about,.

This is really an interesting piece, the painting deceived my eyes from the start, and I'm still having trouble recognizing it for what it is.
