A Second Post

La Joconde (Mona Lisa), 1749-1828 by Leonardo da Vinci, The Louvre.

That mysterious smile, many words have been written about it and its meaning, could it be a matter of how you look at it?

My Question. Great Painting! I love it! But, does it deserve to be the most famous painting in the world? - Joe Alessi

I think whether or not it derserves it is of little consequence, it just is.

Not everyone believes American Idol deserves to be the #1 TV show, right?

When I see the Mona Lisa, Bob Dylan's lyrics from the song "Visions of Johanna" come to mind:

"But Mona Lisa musta had the highway blues
You can tell by the way she smiles."

Greetings:

Saw the Mona Lisa in Paris the summer before last, and yes; I think she does deserve it. In any event, she's so much more than a kitsch icon.

I read that the original La Gioconda had lost a young daughter to illness not long before the painting was done. I saw her expression as that of someone who was still grieving, all the while being told to get over it, she would have many more children, etc.

Thanks much for this beautiful blog which has provided me with many bright spots on many days.
