Enjoying the Country

Luncheon at the Boating Party, 1880-1881 by Pierre Auguste Renoir, The Phillips Collection.

The young woman holding the dog would eventually become Mme. Renoir and is frequently used by him as a model. Renoir was a very social person and painted scenes of the pastimes he participated in.

This piece played a major role in Amelie.

the jewel of Phillips collection.

Once a texan collector of Renoir said to him: 'how many Renoir have you? I have almost 180 of them'.
Phillips answered: 'I have only this and it's enough in my opinion'. Now perhaps we can say he was right.

I love that movie!

I also agree that if you are going to have only one Renoir - this is the one to have!

Being a librarian, I just have to mention last year's book Luncheon of the Boating Party by Susan Vreeland, which is a fictionalized account of how this painting came into being.
