Brilliant painting! Usually I am not into Kings & Royals - but this one has strength as character!
I agree, orangeguru, although I do like to see paintings of "the royals". I do often wonder though if ANY of the sittings for a painting like this actually involved the costuming etc. Or, are they made up somewhere along the line or based on something....
Actually, Napoleon did not sit for this portrait. He didn't commission it, Ingres painted it for the salon of 1806 in the hopes that it would be accepted by Napoloen. Critics of the salon did not like the work, and Napoleon did not approve of it either.
