Recording Disaster

The Burning of the Houses of Lords and Commons, October 1834 by JWM Turner, Philadelphia Museum of Art.

A huge event that the whole city turned out to see, Turner recorded the fire at Parliament at different times of the fire and from different vantage points.

Lovely painting. The golden light is so appealing. I've wondered if Tasha Tudor considered this painting when she did the watercolor illustrations for her delightful children's book Becky's Birthday. The pictures of the birthday cake floating down the stream with candles and sparklers lit is one of my favorites. There of course it was happy spectacle, while here it was rather a disaster.
