Interior with a Girl at the Clavier by Wilhelm Hammershoi, Private Collection.
Hammershoi's use of crisp clean interiors with natural light recalls the 17th century work of fellow Dutch artist, Johannes Vermeer. Hammershoi's model is his wife Ida whom he painted many times either from the back or in profile.

I wish I would have looked at your web page to see that Hammershoi used his wife as a model before I said it was someone's daughter in my art exam!

Now this is why (well, one of the reasons why) I read YDA -- to find new favorite artists. This is lovely, and I can't wait to check out more of Hammershoi's work. Vermeer sprang to mind even before I read the blurb; Hopper also comes to mind.
first time here. so glad to have found your blog! i'll be back.
Hammershøi was Danish, not Dutch.
